The coast is mostly flat, but\npartly rocky, and has 2 large caves.\nThe interior is tumulated in the south\nand centre, and bold and barren in the\nnorth. The seats are Cardoness, Ardwall\nKirkclauch, and Rusco. The present\nparochial church is modern, and contains\n400 sittings. The previous church, a\nbarn-like building, was served by the\ncelebrated Samuel Rutherford, and is still\nstanding. A granite obelisk to Ruther\nford's memory was erected in 1842,\ndestroyed by lightning in 1847, and rebuili\nin 1851, and makes a conspicuous figure on\na neighbouring hill. A United Presby-\nterian church is in the village, but takes\ndesignation from Gatehouse. There are\n3 schools for 235 scholars, and one of\nthem, for 70, is new.",
