Its length is about 20\nmiles ; its greatest breadth 14 miles ; its\narea 67,858 acres. Real property in\n1880-81, 29,262. Pop. 2256. The border\ndistricts, excepting the south, are moun-\ntainous ; the interior districts are mostly\nhilly ; a large proportion of the whole is\nmoorish, bleak, and wild ; and the inhabi-\nted parts are chiefly low tracts along\nHermitage and Liddle rivers. Hermitage\nCastle, notable both in structure and in\nhistory, is a prominent feature ; and\nmonuments of the Caledonian, the Roman,\nand the feudal times are numerous.
